Home Additions and Master Suites in Birmingham

A master suite add-on or a wing built from the ground up, matched to the house so it reads as if it was always there.

A master suite that reads as original

Spruce's own description of this work is a reimagined master suite add-on, and the standard for a good one is that nobody can point to the seam. From the street and from the inside, the new space should look as if the house was always this size.

That takes a particular kind of attention. Rooflines have to meet existing ones at the right pitch, siding or masonry has to match in course and color, window proportions and trim profiles have to carry on the language of the original house, and floor heights have to run through the doorway without a step nobody planned.

The primary bath pictured here, with its marble tub surround, glass shower and lantern pendant, is the sort of finish detail that makes a suite feel considered rather than bolted on. Attention to detail is the first quality the company names when it describes Steve Varner's work, and an addition is where it shows.

Repurposing what stands, or building from the ground up

Spruce's work includes structures repurposed or built from the ground up, and an addition can be either. Sometimes the best answer is to convert space already inside the house or an outbuilding already on the lot. Sometimes it is a new wing, and sometimes the honest answer is to start from the foundation.

Deciding which is a design question and a building question at once, which is why the homeowner and the architect are at the table with Steve early. Aligned from the start, they can weigh what the existing structure offers against what it would take to work around it.

Whatever stands on the lot, Tudor, Craftsman, Country French, Contemporary or Modern, the addition has to answer to it. Each Spruce project is tailored to meet the needs of the homeowner and the house it joins, so the new work belongs to the old rather than competing with it.

The same management and warranty as a new home

An addition is not a small job to be squeezed between bigger ones. It follows the same path Spruce lists for every project: Design, Estimating, Permitting, Construction, Management and Warranty, with the same team responsible at each stage.

In general craft terms, management matters more on an addition than people expect, because the new work has to be tied into a house that is still occupied. Tie-ins for framing, roofing and mechanical systems are where a rushed addition shows its seams, and a curated team of trusted subcontractors, built from years of industry experience, is how a builder keeps them clean.

Because Warranty is a named stage of the Spruce process, the new square footage is part of the same commitment as the house around it. To talk through an addition in Birmingham, call Steve Varner at 205.369.2777.
